# Synchronize contact tags

## Overview

This destination service keeps an ActiveCampaign contact tag synchronized with a DinMo segment, following the same membership principle as [contact lists](/integrations/destination-platforms/active-campaign/export-audiences.md).

* Contacts entering your segment are assigned the selected tag.
* Previously synchronized contacts leaving your segment have that tag removed.
* Their contact profiles and the tag itself remain in ActiveCampaign.

For example, select an existing `VIP` tag and activate your VIP customer segment. DinMo adds the tag when a contact enters the segment and removes it when the contact leaves.

To get started:

* Create an ActiveCampaign audience destination targeting a contact tag. Refer to the [Destination setup section](#destination-setup).
* Create a user segment containing the contacts to tag. Refer to our [step-by-step tutorial](/guides/get-started-with-dinmo/create-and-activate-segments-on-dinmo/create-your-first-segment.md).
* Activate the segment to the destination to start synchronizing tag membership.

## Destination setup

Use your [ActiveCampaign connection](/integrations/destination-platforms/active-campaign.md#authentication-to-activecampaign), authenticated with your **API URL** and **API Key**, and create an **Export audiences** destination.

The destination is reusable. You select or create its contact tag separately for each activation.

{% endhint %}

## Activation configuration

Once your destination and segment are ready, create an activation.

Under **Audience target**, choose:

* **Contact tag only** to manage only tag membership.
* **List and contact tag** to manage both tag and list membership.

### Select or create a contact tag

Select an existing ActiveCampaign contact tag or create a new one for this activation. A new tag requires a name; its description is optional.

When you choose **List and contact tag**, configure the list in the same activation. The selected or newly created targets apply only to this activation.

### Fields mapping

Map **Email** as the required contact identifier. Each record must contain a valid email address.

You can also map the following standard contact fields:

* First name
* Last name
* Phone

When processing contacts for addition, DinMo creates or updates their profiles and applies the selected tag. An existing association with that tag is reused.

Use [Synchronize contact attributes](/integrations/destination-platforms/active-campaign/synchronize-contact-attributes.md) to keep profile attributes updated independently of tag membership.

### Tag membership

Each synchronization applies changes in segment membership:

* **Entering the segment:** DinMo adds the selected tag to the contact.
* **Leaving the segment:** DinMo removes the selected tag from the previously synchronized contact.

Removing the assignment does not delete the contact or the shared tag. Other tags on the contact remain unchanged.

With **Contact tag only**, the activation does not subscribe or unsubscribe contacts from an ActiveCampaign list.

### Scheduling

Choose how often DinMo should synchronize the segment.

At each run, DinMo adds or removes the selected tag according to changes in segment membership. Tag assignments are updated when the activation runs.

### Troubleshooting

If a contact's tag is not updated, check that:

* The source record contains a valid email address.
* The selected contact tag still exists in ActiveCampaign.
* The latest activation run completed successfully.

Refer to [Troubleshooting Syncs](/activations/troubleshooting-syncs.md) for help investigating failed records.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.dinmo.io/integrations/destination-platforms/active-campaign/synchronize-contact-tags.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
